It’s been an interesting five years in the editor’s chair at World Fishing, but it’s time to move aside for someone new to take over.

It’s reassuring for the outgoing editor – and for WF’s readers – to know that there’s someone taking over who can tell a cockle from a cuttlefish. New editor Jason Holland has been a longstanding contributor and his InSight columns have become one of the most popular features. Jason has been writing about fisheries, seafood and aquaculture practically since he was in short trousers and there isn’t much he doesn’t know about the fish business.

My own relationship with WF goes back a very long way, having been a contributor to these pages long before it became a Mercator title, and back when delivering copy by fax was still seen as something radically innovative. To put it mildly, a lot has changed since then, and no doubt there’s more to come as the possibilities offered by the digital world are still very far from being exhausted.

A change is no bad thing. After five years at the wheel, it’s time bring in new ideas and imagination to let WF develop in new directions, just as the fishing, seafood and aquaculture industries continue to grow, while the old guy is still going to be there in the background as a contributor.

Looking at these industries as a journalist is never dull – and the often tortuous politics of fisheries and the technological leaps taking place mean that there has hardly been a more fascinating time to be in this business.
