Land-based aquaculture technology

A word from the editor…

We’ve all heard the top-level message that we need to produce more food to support a growing global population, and that we do it without further burdening our planet. With its high feed conversion efficiency, low carbon footprint, and minimal water requirements, aquaculture is one of the most viable solutions to this sustainability challenge. However, the sector also faces environmental and social responsibility challenges.

So while aquaculture offers a vital source of more nutritious food, its expansion needs to be carefully managed to avoid exacerbating these problems. As this latest edition of the World Fishing & Aquaculture Special Report series Land-based Aquaculture Technology showcases, this is where the on-land production of blue foods can come into play – its more localised production and shortened supply chains adding to the supply but not the impacts. To borrow from Laxey’s Lárus Ásgeirsson’s remarks at the 2025 Blue Food Innovation Summit, this emerging sector is now accepted and encouraged, and there’s nothing really restricting the volume that can be created.
