As part of its plans, the company is planning to invest up to 5 billion rubles (USD$150m) in the commercial cultivation of salmonid fish in Karelia within the next five years.

The implementation of the project will allow to significantly reduce imports of trout from Norway and to make Karelia one of the largest Russian centres of trout farming.

According to Dmitry Denezhkin, former CEO of Russian Sea, at present Karelia remains the largest producer of salmon in Russia with a well-developed aquaculture industry.

According to the company’s plans, in the next couple of years more than 1,500 tonnes of trout per year are expected to be grown in Karelia. In addition to the Karelian project, the company was granted nine fishing grounds in the Barents Sea for the commercial cultivation of Atlantic salmon.

Potential farming volumes at the sites are estimated at over 30,000 tonnes, which corresponds to 35% of the current volume of imports of salmon into Russia.
