Norwegian aquaculture producer Ode has become the world’s first producer of Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC)-certified farmed Atlantic cod, marking a milestone for the emerging sector.

Atlantic cod was added to the ASC certification programme in 2025 following stakeholder consultation and support from producers, retailers and other seafood industry stakeholders. Ode recently shared the news of its historic profitability in the farmed cod sector.

Norwegian producer Ode has earnt its first ASC certification for farmed Atlantic cod, marking a milestone for aquaculture

“This is a landmark moment not only for Ode, but also for the development of Atlantic cod farming,” said Chris Ninnes, chief executive of ASC.

“As interest in Atlantic cod farming continues to grow, independent certification provides producers, seafood businesses and consumers with greater transparency and confidence,” he added. “It demonstrates that production has been independently audited against ASC’s environmental and social requirements and supports continuous improvement across the sector.”

Atlantic cod is one of the world’s most widely consumed seafood species, while a number of wild cod stocks continue to face challenges. ASC said independent certification can provide a consistent framework for assessing the environmental and social performance of farmed cod as aquaculture develops alongside wild fisheries.

The certification also opens the door for retailers, foodservice companies and seafood buyers seeking independently certified farmed Atlantic cod. Consumers are expected to be able to purchase ASC-certified farmed cod for the first time as certified products reach the market.

“This achievement reflects the commitment of everyone at Ode and demonstrates what can be achieved through collaboration, innovation and a commitment to continuous improvement,” Ninnes said.

Laetitia Rosing, ASC’s regional manager Nordics, said the certification was particularly significant in a region where cod is an important seafood species.

“Atlantic cod is one of the most important seafood species in the Nordics and a favourite on dinner tables around the world,” she said. “Seeing the world’s first producer of ASC-certified farmed Atlantic cod is an exciting milestone.”

ASC said it expects the certification to support further adoption of independent standards as Atlantic cod farming develops.
