The European Commission is asking for input on its forthcoming Vision 2040 for fisheries and aquaculture, setting out a strategy to strengthen the sector’s sustainability, resilience and competitiveness.
The 15-year framework aims to tackle mounting structural pressures facing Europe’s fisheries and aquaculture industries, which play a vital role in food security and coastal livelihoods.

Key challenges include an ageing workforce, limited generational renewal, external economic shocks, dependence on fossil fuels and the need to ensure sustainable fish stock management.
Building on commitments under the European Ocean Pact, insights from the Fishers of the Future study and the ongoing evaluation of the Common Fisheries Policy, the Vision 2040 will address four elements: aquatic food demand, aquatic food supply, workforce renewal, and infrastructure and financing.
Simplification measures will also be considered to ensure objectives are delivered in a proportionate and cost-effective manner.
The call for evidence will remain open until 24 March 2026. Contributions are invited from fishing industry representatives, aquaculture and processing operators, non-governmental organisations, academic institutions, public authorities, social and economic partners and citizens.
Responses can be submitted through the Commission’s Have Your Say portal.
