Europe’s aquafeed sector is entering a new phase as its long-standing global leadership comes under increasing pressure from expanding production in Asia and Latin America, according to industry experts

For decades, European manufacturers have set the benchmark for aquafeed through sustained investment in research and development, advanced feed formulations and a strong focus on sustainability.

Europe must rely on innovation and sustainability to maintain aquafeed leadership amid intensifying global competition and growth

While Europe still accounts for around 21% of global aquafeed market revenue, analysts say its future success will depend less on production volumes and more on innovation and technical expertise.

“Europe’s role in the global aquafeed market is likely to evolve from product to value – from being primarily a volume-driven region to an innovation, sustainability and standards-setting powerhouse,” said Maarten Bijl, chief executive of Skretting.

“While the fastest growth in aquaculture production will continue to come from regions such as Asia and Latin America, Europe will remain highly influential in shaping how aquafeed is produced, regulated and valued globally.”

Europe’s competitive advantage continues to rest on its scientific expertise, robust regulatory framework and leadership in sustainable feed development. Companies across the region have pioneered the use of alternative ingredients, including insect protein and circular feed materials, while developing increasingly precise formulations tailored to different species and farming systems.

However, the sector faces mounting challenges. Rising energy and raw material costs, together with higher labour and regulatory compliance expenses, have made it more difficult for European producers to compete with manufacturers in lower-cost regions. At the same time, rapid aquaculture expansion in Asia and Latin America is creating new centres of production closer to key growth markets.

Despite these pressures, industry leaders believe Europe can maintain its influence by continuing to invest in research, sustainability and locally adapted feed solutions. Analysts agree that while Europe’s dominance may become more contested, its expertise in science-based nutrition and sustainable aquafeed development will remain central to the future growth of the global aquaculture industry.
