German biotechnology company AquaNab has secured investment from Nordic Foodtech VC to advance its nanoantibody technology for more sustainable aquaculture and salmon farming.
The Hamburg-based company, which has developed a feed-delivered alpaca nanoantibody solution targeting sea lice, becomes the first German company and first portfolio company outside the Nordic region to join Nordic Foodtech VC’s portfolio.
“Becoming the first company outside the Nordics, the first company from Germany and the 20th company in the portfolio is an exceptional milestone for us,” AquaNab said in a statement on its website.
Next-gen aquaculture
The company, which is based at Hamburg’s Altona Innovation Park, said that the financial backing reflects confidence in its science, team and ambition to develop the next generation of solutions for more sustainable aquaculture.
AquaNab’s technology uses specific nanoantibodies developed by immunising alpacas to target pathogens affecting global salmon farming. Its initial focus is sea lice, with the company positioning its AquaNabs as non-toxic, stress-free and residue-free.
The company said its protein-based approach is designed to support fish health and welfare while improving fish performance, with rapid on-site integration intended to minimise operational complexity.
It describes the solution as 100% organic and designed to lower environmental footprint, placing sustainability at the centre of its aquaculture proposition.
