Tuna purse seine company Caroline Fisheries Corporation has joined the Global Sustainable Seafood Initiative (GSSI) as a Funding Partner, becoming the organisation’s first partner from Micronesia.

Based in Pohnpei where it was first owned by the state, Caroline Fisheries Corporation became a privately-owned and operated company in 2006.
Having received Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification in 2021, the company is now involved in a fishery improvement programme and is working with various NGOs and stakeholders for the development of biodegradable FADs and the continued progress in their social policies.
It has also partnered with organisations to adopt improved fishing practices to reduce ocean waste and sustainably harvest tuna in the Western and Central Pacific Ocean.
“The Caroline Fisheries Corporation as a company is aware of the on-going need to develop sustainable fishing practices for the preservation of the ocean’s natural resources,” CEO Marko Kamber said.
“We are very excited to join the GSSI partnership to collaborate and share ideas around the sustainability of tuna resources. We look forward to working together to promote sustainable fishing practices for worldwide consumers, for generations to come.”
Caroline Fisheries operates four purse seine vessels in the Western and Central Pacific Ocean, targeting skipjack, yellowfin and bigeye tuna.
