The Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) has launched a 60-day public consultation on the potential inclusion of catfish species in its global certification programme.
The move would bring catfish from the genera Clarias, Heterobranchus, Ictalurus, Ameiurus and Silurus under the ASC Farm Standard.

“The ASC Farm Standard offers a strong framework to address the impacts of catfish farming,” said Michiel Fransen, ASC’s director of standards and science.
“Our research shows that many of the current requirements already work well for catfish, supporting their inclusion in ASC certification.”
The consultation seeks feedback on the suitability of the existing standard to address the environmental and social impacts of catfish farming. While many of the current requirements are deemed applicable, ASC has identified areas such as feed efficiency and fasting duration that require adjustment due to physiological and production differences in catfish.
“We’re especially looking for input on sourcing, mortality limits and fish health and welfare,” continued Franzen.
“The consultation process is vital to ensure the final requirements are not only scientifically robust but also practical for farmers globally.”
ASC chief commercial officer Willem de Bruijn added, “Catfish is a staple for families around the world, and this step ensures it’s produced in ways that are good for communities, animal welfare, the environment and consumers everywhere.”
The consultation runs until the 17 November on the ASC website.
