Aquaship/Intership has ordered a new battery-hybrid wellboat from Norwegian Salt Ship Design.

The new 4,000m³ vessel will be the 41st in the company’s fleet. Along with its significant battery pack, it comes with a specially designed 10,000m3 reverse osmosis system and is prepared for combination treatment.

Aquaship/Intership has ordered a new battery-hybrid wellboat

“This boat will be a fantastic addition to what is already one of the world’s most modern fleets,” said Ole Peter Brandal, chief executive of Aquaship/Intership. “With this system, we can fill the boat with self-produced freshwater in half a day.”

The wellboat is being built by the Spanish shipyard Zamakona which has previously supplied two wellboats for Aquaship/Intership.

It is the first to be contracted in the industry since the company last ordered two boats in 2022 and comes after Aquaship/Intership merged in December, bringing in American Industrial Partners as the largest owner.

Headquartered in Kristiansund and Hareid, Aquaship/Intership has 700 employees, with operations in Chile, Scotland, Ireland, Canada and Norway.

The company says it has been a leader in the development of treatment for lice and amoebic gill disease using reverse osmosis for many years.

“We see and hear what our customers need, and we invest in boats that meet both today’s and tomorrow’s demands,” continued Brandal. “There are new and ever-increasing requirements for fish health, fish welfare, and environmental and climate emissions.”

The company recently announced it was buying another wellboat – Bjørg Pauline – from Nordlaks to meet its growth strategy.
