The new vessel was constructed by Norwegian shipyard Baatbygg and designed by Marin Teknikk

The vessel was officially launched in Port Louis, Mauritius, and is designed to underpin Glacier 51’s focus on quality, traceability and environmental performance in one of the world’s most challenging fisheries.

Purpose-built from the keel up, Austral Odyssey incorporates advanced fishing systems, moonpool line recovery and efficient catch handling and processing designed to protect product quality while reducing environmental impact. The vessel also features a hybrid propulsion system with integrated battery capacity, cutting fuel use and emissions, with design allowances for future transition to lower-emission fuels.

It was constructed by Norwegian shipyard Baatbygg AS and designed by Marin Teknikk, building on Austral’s long-standing shipbuilding partnerships while introducing new technologies tailored specifically to the Glacier 51 operation.

Austral Chief Executive Officer David Carter said the vessel represents both a technological milestone and a statement of confidence in the fishery.

“I want to thank our dedicated Austral team, alongside the naval architects, shipbuilders and contractors, whose skill, commitment and collaboration have made Austral Odyssey a reality,” Carter said. “Austral Odyssey is the physical expression of Glacier 51’s premium promise. Her advanced design ensures the highest product quality while supporting responsible, efficient fishing in the Southern Ocean. This vessel is a clear statement of our confidence in the sustainable management of these fisheries and in Austral’s long-term investment in the region.”

Austral’s Southern Fleet General Manager Theo Verios said the vessel had been engineered with operational realities firmly in mind.

“Every feature of Austral Odyssey – from her fishing systems and moon pool to her hybrid propulsion – has been carefully designed to optimise performance, crew safety and product quality in the most challenging conditions,” he said.

For shipbuilder Baatbygg, the delivery underscores a long-running collaboration with the Australian operator. Chief Executive Kjell-Inge Sjaastad described the project as a shared achievement: “Delivering Austral Odyssey is a proud moment for Baatbygg and a testament to the strong collaboration between our teams. This vessel reflects our shared commitment to quality, innovation and future-focused solutions.”

Sjaastad continued: “Our long-standing and trust-based relationship with Austral Fisheries has been key to the success of this project, and we sincerely appreciate their continued confidence in Baatbygg as a partner.”

The launch of Austral Odyssey adds capacity and technological capability to the Glacier 51 fleet, reinforcing Austral Fisheries’ positioning in sustainably managed Southern Ocean toothfish fisheries and setting a new benchmark for efficiency, innovation and environmental stewardship in the sector.
