New Júlíus Geirmundsson has been launched at the Armón yard in Vigo

The latest in a long series of fishing vessels to carry the Júlíus Geirmundsson name for Ísafjörður company Hraðfrystihúsið Gunnvör, when the new vessel is completed later this year it will replace a factory vessel built in Poland in 1987. The owners went to Skipasýn for the design of the vessel, building on the experience of the naval architect’s work in the development of fresher trawler Páll Pálsson ÍS-102, which was delivered in 2018.

The 67.1-metre, 16-metre beam Júlíus Geirmundsson is the latest in a series of Skipasýn designs built at Armón, preceded by factory trawler Baldvin Njálsson, fresher trawler Hulda Björnsdóttir and research vessel Thórunn Thórðardóttir.

This new factory vessel has accommodation for a crew of up to 27 in single, ensuite cabins, as part of the focus on ensuring high-quality living and working conditions.

Its factory deck is to be outfitted with automated sorting, freezing and palletising systems, and a fishmeal plant will handle factory deck waste.

Júlíus Geirmundsson will get a MAN 3600kW main engine. The deck is being outfitted with a full Ibercisa set of electric winches, with the twin trawl winches controlled by a Scantol iSYM7 system. Ibercisa’s energy management systems are also part of the package.

Gunnvör’s new trawler is now at the outfitting stage at the quayside in Vigo and is scheduled for delivery in the second-half of 2026.
