Ecuador’s Sustainable Shrimp Partnership (SSP) has extended its presence to the Chilean market through retail giant Jumbo, where SSP-approved shrimp will be available under the Cuisine&Co brand.

“We care about our consumers and ensuring the highest quality product for them has always been our objective. We are pleased to work with partners like Jumbo, who are committed on improving consumers choice for healthy and sustainable seafood,” SSP Director Pamela Nath said.

SSP’s shrimp is Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) certified and farmed without the use of antibiotics. It is also fully traceable, with each package stamped with a QR code that Chilean consumers can scan to access key information on their shrimp’s journey from farm to fork.

This information is enabled thanks to a traceability-app that is connected to IBM Food Trust, a platform that provides traceability of food through blockchain technology.

“For consumers, it is important to know that they are acquiring a product that is healthy for them, produced and processed in a responsible way with nature and with workers. Through our traceability tool, consumers have the opportunity to know our story, and demonstrate compliance with the highest quality and sustainability standards,” Songa CEO and SSP founding member Rodrigo Laniado said.

Cencosud Regional Brand Manager María Paz Hasenohr Santa María said the company was thrilled to be introducing SSP shrimp to Chilean consumers.

“SSP provides Ecuadorian premium quality shrimp that have been raised sustainably with care for the selective Jumbo shopper. Our collaboration with SSP, supports our ambition to align with producers who adhere to the highest social and environmental standards. We, like SSP, believe that the best tasting food is made by people who care,” she said.

SSP is a group of companies that are dedicated to transforming shrimp aquaculture. All SSP farms meet the requirements of the ASC standard for responsible aquaculture, plus three additional criteria which all SSP products must meet: Zero antibiotics, 100% traceability and neutral impact on water.
