The National Fisheries Institute (NFI) has praised the US administration’s move to ease tariffs on a selection of food products after President Donald Trump signed an executive order exempting items such as coffee, bananas, and beef from broad tariff measures.

NFI said the decision is a step toward lowering food costs but stressed that seafood must also be included to make a meaningful difference for consumers and industry workers.

The NFI has praised new US tariff relief, urging for inclusion of all seafood

According to the organisation, rising prices have pushed seafood – considered one of the healthiest animal proteins – beyond the reach of many families. Expanding tariff relief to all seafood, NFI noted, is vital for reducing consumer costs, protecting jobs across the US seafood sector and supporting public health.

The institute also highlighted the administration’s progress in opening international markets for American seafood. A plan to expand access for US products through the application of zero duties in Switzerland and Liechtenstein is expected to benefit American companies and aligns with the goals outlined in the president’s executive order on seafood competitiveness and economic growth.

NFI said it supports continued efforts to strengthen global seafood trade and reinforce the resilience of America’s seafood industry.
