Superior Fresh is preparing to celebrate the first harvest from its new land-based Atlantic salmon farm in Albany, Indiana, marking a significant milestone for the company’s expansion into recirculating aquaculture system salmon production.

Headquartered in Wisconsin, Superior Fresh made history in 2018 as the first commercial producer of land-based Atlantic salmon in the US. The upcoming harvest – scheduled for 4 July – represents the latest stage in the company’s expansion strategy following its acquisition of the Indiana facility from fellow salmon farmer AquaBounty in 2024 for US$9.5 million.

Superior Fresh’s new land-based Atlantic salmon farm in Albany, Indiana, will celebrate its first harvest the week of 4 July 2026

“Ten years ago, we set out to prove that world-class Atlantic salmon could be raised in the United States,” said Brandon Gottsacker, chief executive and co-founder of Superior Fresh.

“The opening of Albany marks the next phase of that vision — expanding reliable domestic supply while continuing to deliver the quality, consistency and nutritional value our customers expect.”

The Indiana facility uses advanced recirculating aquaculture technology that continuously filters and reuses water, significantly reducing overall water consumption compared with conventional production systems. The approach is also designed to improve biosecurity and minimise environmental impacts.

The first commercial harvest comes as demand for locally produced seafood continues to grow across North America, driven by consumer interest in traceability, food security and environmental stewardship.

“Our focus right now is simple: creating more access points for people to purchase the product they’ve been asking for,” said Nathan Hefti, the company’s chief revenue officer.

“Consumer preferences have clearly shifted toward cleaner, healthier protein, and demand for domestically raised seafood continues to grow. Our salmon creates a meaningful opportunity for partners to strengthen customer loyalty and drive category growth.”

With production now entering its commercial phase, Superior Fresh expects the Albany operation to play an increasingly important role in supplying fresh Atlantic salmon to domestic markets while showcasing the potential of large-scale land-based aquaculture in the US.
