Innovafeed and NaturAlleva have teamed up to integrate black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) ingredients into aquafeed formulations for key Mediterranean species, including seabass, seabream, sturgeon and trout.
The agreement marks a new milestone in the commercial deployment of insect-based ingredients in aquaculture, moving beyond pilot projects toward full industrial and market-driven adoption.

From January 2026, NaturAlleva will incorporate Innovafeed’s BSFL ingredients at meaningful commercial volumes across all sea bass and sea bream feed formulations, with a progressive rollout across the Mediterranean region.
“Our collaboration with Innovafeed supports the integration of scientifically validated functional ingredients into our feeding strategies, reinforcing our commitment to innovation while promoting optimal fish performance and health,” said Ugo Biasin, chief executive of NaturAlleva.
Clément Ray, chief executive and co-founder of Innovafeed, added: “This partnership marks a key step in positioning insect-based ingredients as true functional components in aquaculture. Our BSFL solutions go beyond basic nutrition, supporting improved health, robustness and resilience across a wide range of species.”
Innovafeed’s BSFL ingredients contain functional compounds such as chitin, lauric acid and antimicrobial peptides. The company says these components support a healthy gut microbiota, enhance robustness and stress resilience and contribution to overall zootechnical performance.
The decision to scale follows more than a decade of R&D trials by NaturAlleva and several years of successful commercial use, supported by accumulated performance and health data.
The two companies also plan to explore additional functional properties of insect-based ingredients, with particular attention to chitin-related benefits in other aquaculture species.
