The FiiZK Group has agreed to sell its lice skirt production business to Icelandic supplier, Hampidjan Group.

The sale of FiiZK Protection is part of an overall rationalisation of the business to focus on unconventional farming methods such as closed and semi-closed cages.

The first step of this strategy was shared on 26 June 2024, when FiiZK announced the sale of FiiZK Digital to seafood investor Bluefront.

“The aquaculture industry is increasingly recognising the biological and commercial benefits that closed and semi-closed cages bring,” said Jan Erik Kvingedal, managing director of FiiZK.

“To date, FiiZK’s cage products have successfully completed more than 70 production cycles, demonstrating strong fish growth and no problems with lice and escapes.”

FiiZK Protection is a leader in the production and sale of salmon lice skirts for the aquaculture sector and has about 80% market share in Norway. Its FiiZK Protection business delivered revenue of around NOK 100 million (€8.46 million) in 2023.

The sale – for an undisclosed sum – is expected to complete in September at which point FiiZK Protection will be renamed.

Its existing facility at Mjåtveit, outside Bergen, west Norway, is not part of the transaction. This business, which manufactures technical textiles for closed and semi-closed fish cages, will instead be transferred to FiiZK Industries.

A key part of FiiZK’s new focus is its ‘Protectus’ closed cage which takes the best features of the company’s three previous models, ‘Certus’, ‘Ecomerden’ and ‘Starfish’.

The company has also recently launched the ‘FlekZii Cage’, which is a semi-closed cage solution that reduces lice infestation.
