Through Ministerial Resolution No. 000191-2023-Produce, Peru’s Ministry of Production has set 2023’s first fishing season for its anchovy (Engraulis ringens) and white anchovy (Anchoa nasus) resources destined for indirect human consumption in the maritime area between the northern end of the maritime domain of Peru and 16°00’LS.

The first season 2023 anchovy quota has been set at 1.091 million tonnes, down 60% on the previous year

The new regulation, published in the Official Gazette El Peruano, also states the start of the first fishing season 2023 is subject to the conclusions and recommendations that the Instituto del Mar del Perú (IMARPE) sends to the Ministry of Production, as a result of the authorised exploratory fishing, which was due to be carried out as of 3 June 2023 for a period of up to seven days in the maritime area outside five nautical miles of the coastline, in the extreme north of the Peruvian sea and 16°00’LS.

Catchers’ total maximum permissible limit in the north-central zone (LMTCP North-Centre) for anchovies and white anchovies has been set at 1.091 million tonnes, down from last year’s first season quota of 2.79 million tonnes.

Only vessels with a fishing permit for the anchovy resource destined for indirect human consumption, registered and authorized to carry out extractive activities during the current fishing season, may carry out fishing activities.

The fishing season will continue after the exploratory fishing if the findings allow it, and the quota could be changed depending on the new biomass evaluation.

Peru accounts for around 20% of global fishmeal and fish oil production.
