Salmon Scotland’s CEO, Tavish Scott, hailed the global success of Scottish salmon

“This analysis shows the extraordinary success of Scottish salmon overseas, with more than £6 billion in export sales over the past decade and our fish reaching almost 100 markets around the world,” said Salmon Scotland chief executive, Tavish Scott.

“This success matters for the rural and island communities that depend on salmon farming for skilled, year-round employment.”

Annual export value climbed from £445 million in 2016 to £828 million last year, an increase of 86%. Export volumes also rose by 51%, with Scottish salmon shipped across North America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East.

Around 110,000 tonnes of salmon were exported to 45 direct markets in 2025 alone, equivalent to more than 700 million meals. Across the decade, exports amounted to more than 6.4 billion meals worldwide.

The £6.1 billion export total was spread across key salmon farming regions, including the north west Highlands, Shetland, Argyll and Bute, the Western Isles and Orkney. The sector directly employs around 2,500 people and supports a further 8,500 jobs in processing, logistics and supply chains.

France and the US remained the largest export destinations in 2025, worth £337 million and £301 million respectively, while China accounted for £97 million.

Industry leaders are also anticipating growth in India and Gulf markets as new trade agreements reduce tariffs and improve market access.
