Norwegian composite specialist Brimer has secured a series of new land-based aquaculture contracts, underlining growing demand for aquaculture equipment and composite containment systems across the modern fish farming sector.

One of Brimer’s new projects is a halibut development for Sande Seafarm Production

Contracts include a land-based cod facility for Ode/Lumarine, halibut developments for Sande Seafarm Production and Nordic Halibut, as well as two undisclosed salmon projects.

According to Fredrik Ryslett, the company’s newly appointed vice president sales & marketing, increasing investment in land-based facilities is being driven by the operational advantages offered by composite materials.

“The main reason for choosing composites over traditional materials is their excellent corrosion resistance, making them particularly well suited for harsh and demanding environments,” he says.

“They are also highly hygienic, easy to clean and can be moulded into almost any shape, giving designers much greater flexibility.”

Strong performance

Mr Ryslett says composite materials provide significant practical and economic benefits during construction.

“Composites offer an outstanding strength-to-weight ratio. Their low weight makes transportation and installation much easier, requiring lighter lifting equipment and smaller cranes than traditional materials,” he says.

”At the same time, they can be manufactured as large prefabricated modules, allowing for extremely fast on-site installation and significantly reducing construction time.”

The new contracts represent Brimer’s strongest period of activity to date within the aquaculture market.

Brimer’s latest deliveries include a broad portfolio of aquaculture equipment, including fish tanks, covered tanks, walkway systems, biofilters, pump sumps, CO₂ degassers, mortality bins, centre outlets and other specialised process equipment.

Adapatable and low maintenance

Mr Ryslett says the company’s modular construction system enables composite containment systems to be adapted for a wide range of project requirements.

“Our construction system is modular, making it easy and cost-effective to transport by standard shipping containers, trucks or sea freight. The modular design also allows the system to be installed inside existing buildings when required, making it well suited for both new developments and retrofit projects.”

He adds that tanks can be supplied in virtually any configuration, with diameters of up to 30 metres and variable wall heights, while integrating directly with walkways, covers, access hatches and other ancillary equipment.

Looking beyond installation, Mr Ryslett believes the long-term operational benefits are equally important for fish farming operators.

“It is a low-maintenance system because the composite material is corrosion-free and has a smooth, non-porous surface that is easy to clean and maintain,” he says.

“The lightweight, prefabricated elements also minimise on-site work, reducing both construction time and the amount of work that must be carried out during installation.”

Demand is increasing for both land-based facilities and closed containment solutions at sea.

Mr Ryslett says durable composite infrastructure will play an increasingly important role in improving sustainability and lowering operating costs going forward.

“Building with a material that has a long service life is a key sustainability advantage,” he says.

“A long-lasting, low-maintenance solution reduces lifetime costs, minimises downtime and the need for future repairs or replacement, making it a sustainable choice over the full life cycle of the facility.”

He adds that Brimer’s integrated composite approach, combining tanks, roofs and walkway systems in a single material, improves long-term structural integrity while reducing the risk of leaks.

The smooth, non-porous surfaces also discourage biofouling and simplify routine cleaning, helping operators maintain hygienic production environments while reducing maintenance demands.
