The United States was the largest market for Indian shrimp in the first-half of 2025

According to Shrimp Insights, the divergence between value and volume growth reflected the stronger prices and continued expansion of higher-value product categories.

In terms of products, raw whiteleg shrimp (Penaeus vannamei) exports remained stable at 273,190 tonnes (+1% year-on-year), maintaining their dominant share, while black tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon) shipments continued their steep decline, dropping 28% year-on-year to just 8,351 tonnes in the six-month period. In contrast, value-added products stood out as the big success story, surging 37% to 37,276 tonnes, demonstrating India’s growing competitiveness in cooked, marinated and breaded shrimp. Wild-caught shrimp exports also inched up 4% year-on-year to 27,385 tonnes.

With regards to markets, the United States remained the largest buyer of Indian shrimp, with imports rising 13% 152,418 tonnes. However, Shrimp Insights said the surge is most likely due to frontloading related to the reciprocal tariffs.

Meanwhile, the EU also showed strong momentum – up 26% to 47,507 tonnes, while Canada grew by 10% (to 10,933 tonnes) and Japan by 6% (to 16,422 tonnes). These increases, the organisation said, show the attempt of India’s exporters to diversify their markets.

In contrast, China underperformed, recording an 8% decline to 65,077 tonnes, with shipments fluctuating strongly month to month.
