Norwegian seafood supplier Domstein Sjømat is considering further investment in SEALPAC packaging technology after reporting strong operational performance from a traysealer installed at its Hagan production facility.

The company, which supplies fresh seafood products to major retailers across Norway, has been using a SEALPAC A6max traysealer since 2023 to package a range of fish products using both modified atmosphere packaging and vacuum skin packaging. According to the company, the equipment has delivered the flexibility, reliability and product quality needed to support its nationwide distribution network.

Domstein Sjømat is reporting strong performance from the SEALPAC traysealer and considers additional investment opportunities

“One of its main strengths is the consistent sealing quality,” said Kestutis Krasauskas, production manager at Domstein Sjømat.

“The machine is also very dependable in daily operation. We have a stable performance with minimal downtime, which is critical for maintaining production flow.

“Another strong point is flexibility. The A6max allows us to run different tray sizes and product types with relatively quick changeovers, which fits well with our production needs.”

Domstein packages an average of 1.5 tonnes of fish per day at its Hagan facility, with volumes reaching as much as five tonnes during peak periods. The A6max forms the centrepiece of one of two automated packaging lines at the site.

The traysealer is integrated into a fully synchronised packaging line that includes x-ray inspection, weighing and sleeving systems, helping the company maintain its focus on quality, traceability and food safety.

Krasauskas said the packaging produced by the machine has also proven highly effective in protecting products throughout the supply chain.

“Its packaging is strong and of high quality. It is not easy to damage mechanically, which ensures that the seafood product is well protected during transport and handling,” he said.

Looking ahead, Domstein indicated that future growth could lead to additional investment in SEALPAC equipment.

“If production volumes continue to grow, the older, stand-alone traysealer of a different brand may well be replaced for another SEALPAC traysealer, as we are quite pleased with its performance,” said Krasauskas.
