Based on Damen’s SeaFisher 3210 design, New Zealand company Sanford’s new 32-metre, 10-metre breadth San Koura Rangi is the outcome of a collaborative process to develop a highly energy-efficient fishing vessel that meets all of Sanford’s specific requirements within a compact and efficient design.

San Koura Rangi

Built at Damen Maaskant, San Koura Rangi has been delivered to New Zealand fishing company Sanford

San Koura Rangi’s steelwork was fabricated by a shipbuilder in Poland and brought to Damen Maaskant in Stellendam for outfitting.

As well as diesel-electric propulsion with a power management system to optimise engine operations and a take-me-home back-up option. Three 450kW Scania DI16 091M generators supply energy as required to San Koura Rangi’s power management system (PMS) to power the 700kW Nidec LC400 electric prop motor of 700kW via the Reintjes LAF 675 7.901:1 reduction gear and a RubberDesign propulsion shaft system connected to the 2200mm propeller which turns inside a nozzle.

This set up also has a 100kW take-me-home motor, required for Class, which also requires the additional Caterpillar C4.4 emergency genset. San Koura Rangi has a Barke rudder system from DMC and a 100kW Veth Propulsion bow thruster.

The newbuild has electric winches from Naust Marine, part of a comprehensive suite of sophisticated systems capable of routing energy back to the vessel’s energy network, optimising power consumption and contributing to the vessel’s overall efficient operation.

The Naust Marine package as a whole was designed and manufactured in Spain, including the deck hardware, water-cooled electrical cabinets, the trawl block system and the new ATW that provides effective management of the twin trawl winches. The ATW provides the skipper with a range of trawl modes, preset options and data displays, and there is also VPN access for remote technical support.

Onboard innovations

The pair of 132kW main winches are constructed with grooved barrels for optimum wire protection, and have capacity for 1,600 metres of 22mm warp, plus there’s additional space for bridles to be spooled on top. Automatic spooling is powered by an electric motor with frequency converter control that allows for spooling different diameters and is tuneable for the combination of warp and bridle.

Further innovations include fans and large motors are on variable speed drives. In colder climates in or near the Southern Ocean, the fans can slow down to reduce energy usage. Sanford has focused on using a robust long-lasting paint and anti-fouling coating system, which reduce paint consumption and reduce solvent release to the atmosphere.

The choice has gone to CO2 as the refrigeration gas to be used on board for the -40°C plate freezer supplied by Marefsol and the refrigerated fishroom. Heinen & Hopman (HVAC) provided both the chiller and refrigeration systems, as well as the HVAC systems on board. VCU supplied the fish processing installation on the catch handling deck.

The wheelhouse electronics were supplied by Alphatron, while New Zealand company ATL has provided the plotters and the CCTV/monitoring systems.

Crew considerations

San Koura Rangi also features the latest safety facilities for the crew, and the design takes into account the need to cater for crews spending extended periods at sea

The working deck is outfitted with advanced bird protection systems and there is a sophisticated waste management onboard.

“This vessel is a major step forward in our ambition to reduce the carbon footprint of our operations at sea,” Sanford Project Manager Elliot Kendrick said. “Together with Damen, we’ve developed a vessel that reflects our shared values of sustainability, innovation, and craftsmanship.”

Sea trials took place following the completion of construction at Damen’s Stellendam site and technical acceptance took place in February this year.

“The collaboration has been not only productive, but very rewarding. This vessel represents a joint achievement in sustainable innovation,” said Pim Schuurman, Damen’s Regional Sales Director for New Zealand.
