“As the purse seine is so long and deep, it takes in a large volume,” said Asle Halstensen, skipper of Slaaterøy, which is based at Bekkjarvik in Austevoll, and owned by K. Halstensen AS, adding that there is always an excitement to starting out with a new purse seine.

“It takes time before you are able to see how well it performs and you learn to use it properly. We have now been using this purse seine from Mørenot for a year and a half, and we see that it works very well. This is a purse seine that can take large catches without us having to be afraid of losing the catch. This is important both for us and for the stock.”

Slaaterøy’s purse seine was developed by Mørenot, and Amund Møgster Hatlevik, department manager at Mørenot Austevoll, believes that the company’s bank of skills and experience, as well as the close dialogue with the customer, are important criteria.

“The unique thing about the environment here at Austevoll is that we are very close to the customers and the market. Everyone knows everyone, and when we end the working day we have a coffee with our customers,” he said.

“This means that we get a lot of useful input that is used to constantly further develop and modernise the gear to meet the customers’ needs.”
