Minister Andrew Muir has announced £3.25m in funding to support NI fisheries

“This funding will deliver vital support for fishermen, aquaculture operators, processors, inland fishers, environmental groups and port authorities,” said Muir. “I encourage stakeholders to engage quickly and submit applications as soon as possible.”

The fund includes £750,000 aimed at green growth and decarbonisation projects in the fisheries sector, helping to progress toward a net-zero industry. A further £500,000 is dedicated to the preservation and restoration of blue carbon habitats in Northern Ireland’s territorial waters.

“This year’s programme has been tailored based on recent industry feedback, with support available for areas such as staffing, marketing, operational resilience and sustainability,” said Muir. “We want this funding to help develop long-term strategic plans for the sector.”

Stakeholders are encouraged to propose projects that enhance safety, provide training, add value and reduce operational costs. Eligible initiatives include innovative practices, selective fishing gear, research and port infrastructure improvements.
