Europêche has strengthened its team with the appointment of Mathilde Nouvel as project and communication officer, a move aimed at expanding the organisation’s work on fisheries projects, stakeholder engagement and sector representation.
The Brussels-based body, which represents the European Union fishing industry, said the new role will support both the delivery of key fisheries initiatives and efforts to improve understanding of the sector’s contribution to food security, coastal economies and sustainable ocean management.

Nouvel brings more than three years of experience in project management and communications, with a background in ocean governance, the sustainable blue economy and climate-related initiatives. Prior to joining Europêche, she worked on a range of projects at both EU and United Nations level.
“Europêche plays a vital role in representing a diverse and strategic sector that contributes to key priorities, from food security and Europe’s economic resilience to climate action and ocean governance,” said Nouvel.
“It is crucial that the sector’s efforts and commitments to sustainability are better understood and appreciated across Europe.”
In her new position, Nouvel will join several EU-funded programmes focused on skills development, safety, innovation and sustainability within the fisheries sector. These include BOUTCAR, which supports workforce mobility and transferable skills, Pillars of the Sea, which promotes safer working conditions, and the STARFISH and WaveForward projects, which seek to modernise training and professional standards for fishers across Europe.
Nouvel will also support the ITUNNES project, which aims to strengthen cooperation between scientists and the fishing industry to improve understanding of tropical tuna stocks and fisheries management.
Javier Garat, president of Europêche, said the appointment would enhance the organisation’s ability to advocate for the sector and communicate its priorities.
“Her expertise in communication and project management will reinforce our capacity to effectively represent the sector and promote its contribution to sustainable and responsible fisheries,” he said.
