Vyborg Shipyard, part of Russian vessel construction group United Shipbuilding Corporation, has celebrated the launching of the lead vessel in a series of four new trawlers for Arkhangelsk Trawl Fleet.
The new trawler, named Barents Sea and the first in the MKMT01 series, slid into the water at the yard this week for fitting out to be completed.
The launch ceremony was attended by Arkhangelsk Trawl Fleet’s general director Aleksey Zaplatin, veteran skipper Vladimir Lupachev, the Arkhangelsk region’s minister for agriculture and Barents Sea’s godmother Irina Bazhanova.
According to the Vyborg Shipyard, the 86 metre overall, 17 metre breadth factory trawler is the first of its kind to be built at a Russian shipyard with this level of technical sophistication and automation on board.
Barents Sea is will operate for Arkhangelsk Trawl Fleet in the northern region and is designed to be able to process 160 tonnes of fish per day, producing fillets, and with a plant for producing fish oil and fishmeal from factory offcuts, as well as having a a canning line as part of its factory deck.
