The 120 metre long Dutch factory trawler Frank Bonifaas SCH 72 took onboard a new Herring -- Bluewhiting trawl this summer, after mounting a new crane on deck.
The trawl taken on board, was a Vónin Pelagic 1920 metre circumferance with 48 metre meshes in the forenet. The belly consists of Nylon netting and a few sections of Dyneema netting. The frame is of Eurosteel and Dyneema. The Codend is also delivered by Vónin.
To fit this large trawl, the ship purchased new 14 square metres Thyborøn trawl doors, type 10.
Since instaling the new crane, it was now possible to change both trawl and doors while fishing. It makes the whole operation much easier.
Frank Bonefaas used the new trawl while fishing for Bluewhiting and Herring in international waters, from north of the Faroes, and as far north as 73 degrees lattitude. Bluewhiting has been scarce lately, so they concentrated more on catching the remaining Herring quota.
Herring fishing was good at the time, so they had adequate for their production 24 hours a day. The trawl lived up to expectations, and was easy to tow, considering the size. The Frank Bonefaas is now fishing for Horsemackrel, and will be returning to the Bluewhiting fishing at the start of the season west of Ireland in the beginning of the new year.
