A new report says that Vietnamese seafood exports reached US$4.7bn in the third quarter of 2013 – a 12.5% increase on the same period last year.

The Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) third quarter report says that this takes the total Vietnam seafood exports in the first three quarters of 2013 up to US$4.7bn - 4.5% up on the same period last year.
It’s not all good news though. While shrimp exports are still on the up, the report says that pangasius exports have slowed, while the export of tuna and other marine products continued its downward trend from previous quarters.
With Vietnam shrimp exports increasing from 45.5% and 65.5% every month in the third quarter of 2013, shrimp is becoming an ever more important commodity for the Vietnamese seafood export market.
Whiteleg shrimp holds an increasingly important position with the proportion rising sharply from 33% of total shrimp export volume last year to 46.15% this year – nearly equivalent to black tiger shrimp.
VASEP says that the average turnover in exports of US$600m per month needs to be maintained in the last quarter of 2013 to bring the total seafood export value to US$6.5bn as expected.
The full third quarter report will be available on 6 November 2013.
