Trawling specialist Vónin Ltd has equipped the Finnur Fridi (see World Fishing, February), with toughened purse seining and pelagic trawling gear. Called the "Blue Whiting trawl", it has a circumference of 2,048 metres, 32-metre meshes in the forenet and is made of braided "Super 12" material in different colours. This gives a higher braking strength than the old material.

The forenet mesh is hand spliced to ensure it keeps its shape under tension.

The headlines are of both Euroflex 36mm and 22mm Dyneema, sidelines are 36mm and the belly is made of nylon netting except for some 1m and 80mm pannels made of Dyneema.

The sidelines on the Dyneema part of the belly use Dyneema rope from Euronnete.

The trawl is lighter to tow thanks to its larger mesh and a shorter belly from the 16m meshes and down.

The Finnur Frídi has two pairs of trawl doors, one from Injector brand, Faroes, is 17 square metres and the other from Poly -- Ice, Iceland, is 18 square metres.

Vónin, which has a purpose-built, net hall at its Faroes' headquarters, worked with the skipper on the design and size of the purse seine which is 326 fathoms long, 100 fathoms deep and shaped as a triangle. It has 2,050 BPB 8000 floats from Morenot of Norway.

The netting, which is nylon-tar treated, was manufactured in India under Vónin supervision, while the purse seine net was manufactured by Vónin specialists at the Vónin factory.

The vessel's quality purse seine rings are Boss 100 SR from Frekhaug in Norway and the wire ropes were supplied by Vónin.

There are 1,200m of Bridon Starfish 32mm wire ropes on the purse seine and the trawl uses 2x2000m Bridon Starfish 40 mm. The net has stronger netting in some of its exposed sections for more durability in bad weather.
