The Northern Shipyard in St Petersburg has begun construction of the tenth vessel in the series of trawlers being built for Norebo Group.

Tenth Norebo trawler build underway

The 81.60 metre, 16 metre breadth Kapitan Sosnin has been ordered by Norebo subsidiary Sakhalin Leasing Fleet and will operate in the Russian Far East on herring, pollock and other species. Of the series of ten, six are planned for operation in Northern waters and four for the Far East.

“Although we are still far from the completion of the entire project, we have already passed the half-way point,” said Norebo technical director Pavel Kosolapov at the keel-laying ceremony for Kapitan Sosnin.

“We have learned to overcome difficulties and the main conclusion that can be drawn now is that the revival of domestic civil shipbuilding is taking place before our eyes. We know what modern vessels our fleet needs, and our experience helps the shipyard acquire new competencies in the construction of high-tech fishing vessels.”

Designed by Nautic Rus, Kapitan Sosnin and its partner vessels features the inverted Enduro Bow configuration, providing a better use of foreship space and excellent seakeeping qualities. Powered by a 6200kW main engine, it will be able to operate in ice up to 50cm thick.

“Laying the keel of the tenth vessel in the series is a truly significant event. A shipbuilder couldn’t wish for anything better,” commented Northern Shipyard’s director Igor Orlov.

“We are treading a difficult path, acquiring new knowledge and skills associated with the construction of a large fishing fleet. In such close and successful cooperation with Norebo Group, I am sure, we will overcome every difficulty and build the best trawler-processors in the world.”

This tenth trawler is named in honour of Viktor Efimovich Sosnin, who spent his whole professional life in the Far East fishing industry, including more than ten years as a trawler skipper.
