The new series of Polar trawl doors, the hydro-wing design constructed in double compartment body giving greater spreading force with less resistance, has had an exceptional response from the market, according to Polar Doors.

Jupiter 12m doors on Icelandic vessel “Gudmundur”

The Jupiter hydro-wing has proven its performance on several vessels fishing various species under different conditions. The first pair, 12m and 3,400kg doors, were taken in use on “Snorri Sturluson” fishing ocean redfish in Irmingersea, replacing the 13.5m doors. The skipper reported greater spread than he has seen before with less resistance and was very pleased with the stability of the doors during turning.

Several pairs are in use in West African waters fishing mackerel, horse-mackerel and sardinella on the Iceland and Faroe Islands related factory trawlers operated in Mauritania and the Icelandic joint venture operating in Morocco. The Russian trawler “Valery Dzhaparidze” has a pair of Jupiter hw 9.5m doors operating in Mauritania.

In March the company shipped two pairs to the 105m Spanish series vessels, a pair of Jupiter hw 10m, a pair of Jupiter hw 11m and a pair of Jupiter 7.5m doors to a Lithuanian vessel.

The Russian trawler “Boris Syromyatnikov” was the first to take the Jupiter hydro-wing for herring fishing in North Atlantic and Alexander Gaivoronsky, Chief of Fishing Department of Murmansk Trawl Fleet says they are very pleased with the door's performance. “We are seeing good performance with the Jupiter hw doors, excellent stability, good and steady opening and good trawling speed”.

The Vestmannaeyjar purse seine trawler “Gudmundur” has a pair of Jupiter hw 12m doors fishing capelin and will use the same for fishing blue whiting. Skipper Sturla Einarsson says, “I am very impressed with the doors, I can fish as close to the surface as I like and look forward to going deep after the blue whiting”.

A pair of Jupiter hw 11.5 are being tested on the Dutch vessel “Jan Maria” operated by Parlevliet & van der Plas. She was previously using 13m and 13.5m doors.

The most recent delivery is to “Hardhaus”, fishing from Austervoll in Norway. Jupiter hw 15m doors are being tested and first results show that they give similar spread to the previous 18m doors.

Polar's semi-pelagic doors, Mercury hydro-wing are booming in the South American market. The first pair of Mercury hw was taken in use on the Argentinean “Coalsa Segundo” in December. The vessels uses a pair of 7.5m which give 15% greater spread than the previous 7.7m doors.

“The Mercury hydro-wing doors are the best doors I have ever used” says skipper Carlos Calisano on “Coalsa Segundo”. “Compared with previous performance, I estimate that our catch performance has increased by not less than 10%.”

“Since then, we have delivered two pairs in Argentina and are building four more pairs – two pairs for Argentina and two pairs for Chile” says Polar's Atli Mar Josafatsson.

The first pair of Neptune hydro-wing bottom doors is being tried out in Iceland. “We expect to see greater spread compared to same size of other doors and less resistance,” says Atli.
