The Tuna Management Association of New Zealand (TMA) is uniting with an international network of supply chain stakeholders to improve management and recognition for responsible tuna fisheries.

By joining the International Pole & Line Foundation (IPNLF) wants to help to ensure a thriving future for the fisheries as well as the communities and businesses connected to them.
“For over 16 years, we have proudly supported the albacore troll tuna fishers of New Zealand, championing their sustainability credentials and assisting them in achieving and maintaining MSC certification,” said Doug Saunders-Loder, president of the TMA.
“We look forward to working with IPNLF and its Member network to ensure that one-by-one tuna fisheries get the recognition that they deserve.”
Founded in 2001, TMA supports a fleet of owner-operated domestic vessels by providing up-to-date information on fishery management issues and ensuring that the fleet remains aware of and compliant with local safety and management system requirements.
TMA was also the driving force behind the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification of the albacore troll fishery, which was first certified in 2011 and then recertified in 2017.
Through its membership of IPNLF, TMA joins a network of supply chain stakeholders that includes fisheries, processors, traders, suppliers, brands and retailers working together to use the influence of the market to create change through practical fishery projects and stakeholder cooperation.
