The 168m Antarctic Provider was built by CIMC Raffles Offshore and is powered by a Wärtsilä 31 engine and enhanced with dynamic positioning (DP) capabilities, which prevents the need for anchoring during transshipment.

“Despite the challenging global environment and lockdown periods in 2020, our partners truly stepped up to keep up the progress on this vessel,” said Eldar Vindvik, vice president fleet renewal and procurement, Aker BioMarine. “The result is an incredible leap forward in maritime technology and sustainability that will enhance our krill harvesting operations in Antarctica.”

The vessel will replace Aker BioMarine’s existing support vessel, La Manche, transporting krill products and crew to the company’s logistics hub in Montevideo, Uruguay.

Along with the four-stroke diesel engine and DP, key features include a hybrid propulsion system, frequency-controlled thrusters and four 40,000m3 cargo holds plus moveable cranes.

Awaiting classification by DNV GL, the vessel is in full compliance with the IMO Polar Code, meeting requirements on hull strength and cold-proofing to combat the Antarctic climate.
