The low-flying 15 VFB trawl door from Thyborøn Trawldoor has been thoroughly tested for bottom trawling onboard the Nueve Joven Josefina of Minorca.

Skipper Miguel Moreno says that low-flying doors really work.
“Regarding fuel, we have savings of around 40%. To save means to earn more, making fishing profitable and sustainable. This system with the low-flying doors really works, this is the future,” Mr Moreno told the Spanish edition of the Simrad Magazine.
“We also have to bear in mind that, if we all use it, we will avoid harming the seabed and improve fishing immediately”, he added.
The testing in the Mediterranean has been taking place for some time, using the ITI and PI Simrad trawl monitoring system, trawls with similar rope diameter and trawl doors from Thyborøn.
The testing developed into a project in cooperation with the Spanish Oceanographic Institute and a full research study of conventional trawl doors versus the new low-flying doors from Thyborøn.
The Danish study into the same matter also concludes fuel saving of up to 40% per kilogram of fish caught.
“We mostly see a minimum saving of 10-15% in fuel consumption by using our flying door”, said Jan Bundgaard, Thyborøn’s sales manager.
Meanwhile, Baltic Net in Poland has ordered eight sets of specially designed 15 WFS doors from Thyborøn, for Polish trawlers fishing in the Baltic.
The semi-pelagic doors are used for catching cod, herring and sprat.
