The Norwegian shipyard Solstrand completed and delivered its latest building, the MFV Altaire, to her Scottish owner Altaire Fishing Company, from the Shetland Islands, last month. The ownership of Altaire is shared by seven people but only two of them, John Peter Duncan and Jerry Ramsay, will be going to sea. The new pelagic trawler will fish for herring and mackerel in the North Sea and the Atlantic Ocean.

The contract was signed in June 2002 and the co-operation between yard and owner has been very good throughout the building period, a statement from the shipyard says. MFV Altaire is the first vessel delivered to Shetland by Solstrand, and the Norwegian shipyard expects the new vessel to become a good reference for Solstrand in the UK waters.

The loading capacity is 2500 cum, with 13 cargo tanks arranged for cooling with circulated sea water. The RSW machinery is from Teknotherm AS in Halden, Norway and the capacity for this plant is 2 x 1.000.000 kcal/h divided on two equal compressor plants. Cooling media is ammonia.

The main engine is a Wärsilä 16V32 on 8000 kW (blocked output on 6485 kW) connected to a CP propeller with diameter 4,3 m. in nozzle via a Wärtsilä gearbox type SCV 105.

Several local suppliers and sub-contractors have contributed to make MFV Altaire a quality product, reports Solstrand. Vik Elektro have supplied and carried out the electrical installation, Maritim Montering and Maritime Møbler have delivered and fitted the furniture's and accommodation.

The wheelhouse consoles and installation work has been carried out by the shipyard's own carpenters. Radars, electronic and fish finding equipment was delivered by H. Williamson & Sons from Shetland.
