Naust Marine will be promoting its ATW-CatchControl system at Icefish 2008, marketing manager, Helgi Kristjánsson tells World Fishing.

The main purpose of the ATW system is to control the automatic hauling and shooting of the trawl and to have the opening of the trawl at a maximum, even in heavy sea or strong side current.

After 25 years of constant trials in the rough seas of the North Atlantic, the company says that ATW is the most advanced electric winch system available.

Mr Kristjánsson says that the main advantage of electric winches over hydraulic winches is that the installation cost is less and the energy cost is lower – an important factor to consider with the current high price of fuel.

The ATW system has recently been updated so that it has the option to control the towing winches with signals from Simrad and Marport sensors on the net and trawl door, or by holding the same tension on both towing warps.

It can also be connected to land via the internet, so that the land-based technicians can connect remotely to the computer to attempt to identify and fix any problem that may occur.

“We are improving the system all the time and it is in use on board 65 vessels from all over the world,” says Mr Kristjánsson.

Naust Marine is also supplying complete winch packages for W van der Zwan pelagic trawlers - fire damaged Willem van der Zwan and Alida. The packages include Naust Marine control systems and Ibercisa winches.

Winches from Ibercisa will be on display at the outside area of the exhibition.

Also, a new electrical spooling gear system, which has the option to control the speed of the spooling gear via computer, is being installed on the first vessel, HB Grandi’s Faxi RE, in September. The advantage of the electronic spooling gear is that it can control the wire so that it is laid down evenly on the drum, even if the wire (or the new dyne robes) has a different diameter due to wear on different sections of the wire.

Mr Kristjánsson says in conclusion: “We are quite excited about Icefish this year. The purpose of the exhibition is to meet people and we have made very good contacts at previous shows”.
