According to reports, the Namibian government has invested an estimated N$62 million in the development of aquaculture projects throughout the country.

Alushe Hitula, Acting Deputy Director of Aquaculture in the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources has said that increased investment by the private sector is also needed in order to develop the aquaculture sector.

"In order for the private sector to become actively involved in aquaculture production, they require land and financing. The Ministry therefore calls upon the Regional Councils to avail land to potential investors and the Agribank and Development Bank of Namibia to make financing available to the private investors in order to develop the aquaculture sector," she said.

The ministry is currently working on a feasibility study to identify the potential of fish farming in all 13 regions of the country. According to reports, this study will enable the government to intensify aquaculture. Ms Hitula said aquaculture can play a major role in improving livelihoods for rural communities, women and the unemployed youth.

A total of 16 mariculture farms are currently operating in the country.

Ms Hitula said aquaculture is highly beneficial for the country as it provides food as well as much-needed jobs.
