The Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organisation (NAFO) has released a report on a recent meeting of its working group on the ecosystem approach framework to fisheries management.

The report provides advice on the working group’s review of areas closed to fishing to protect vulnerable sponges and corals, on the prevention of “significant adverse impacts” on bottom-dwelling organisms, and on progress on NAFO’s roadmap to implementing ecosystem approaches to fisheries management.

NAFO’s working group is composed of fishery managers and scientists to provide input and guidance on the development of an effective ecosystem approach framework to fisheries management within NAFO waters.

The report will be discussed at the upcoming NAFO annual meeting to be held from 22 to 26 September in Vigo, Spain.
