Mustad Autoline will launch its SeaBird Saver™ in August this year - the first effective audio-laser solution, that prevents seabird bycatch and bait loss.

The company says that this environmentally friendly solution is both economically advantageous for fishermen and ecologically safe, without negative impact on the environment.

During the setting of longlines, flocks of seabirds gather near the stern of fishing vessels, waiting for the baited hooks. When a bird steals the bait from the sinking hook it renders the hook useless for fishing - causing great financial loss in the longlining industry – and can also result in the bird getting hooked.

Mustad Autoline and SaveWave say that the SeaBird Saver is an innovative solution to the problem. It is a vessel-based device that emits both a visual and acoustic stimulus that deters birds from the baited lines. The birds feel threatened by the physical presence of the laser beam and its natural response is to avoid contact and move away. The sounds, that are intense and intelligent, mix between predatory calls, unnatural sinus waves and distress cries, that can either scare the birds away altogether, or make them more sceptical to the laser deterrent.

The system consists of a movable laser source and sound system, and is designed to be mounted on a rail or other high vantage point onboard. The equipment is protected against extreme cold and frost by an internal heating system.

The SeaBird Saver is sponsored by the European Eurostars project.
