Macduff Shipyards in Scotland has finished its first ever vessel built for the Irish Republic.

The Seagull 11, which was finished last September for Michael Kirwan from Clogherhead, has a round bilge hull with bulbous bow and bulbous skeg area forward of the propeller. The keel is in box form to hold ballast, and the vessel is fitted with profiled bilge keels.

The steel for the hull was produced in kit form by the Yard's profiling divison, and construction of the hull was sub-contracted to Richards Dry Dock & Engineering Ltd in Great Yarmouth.

On completion of the hull it was towed north by Targe Towing Limited to Macduff for fiting out. Layout below deck from forward -- forepeak with storage and chain locker bow thruster and sonar, fishroom, engineroom and cabin.

On the main deck from forward -- winch room, then gear store to port and compartment for ice making machinery to starboard and a deck toilet compartment. On the starboard side of the vessel the fish hopper is arranged at the stern, with a hydraulic conveyor running forward to a trash chute. Forward of that is arranged with prawn/fish washers and a chill dip tank. On the port side there is a non weathertight section aft, with a transom door, and containing a split net drum. Between the net handling area and the gear store is the deckhouse access, the galley/messroom, the food store and an oilskin locker. The steering gear compartment is arranged on the main deck. The main engine is a Mitsubishi S12R MPTA rated 399kw at 1600RPM driving a 2300mm diameter 4 blade Heimdal CP propeller in a fixed nozzle ring through a Heimdal HG570LM gearbox with 7.05: 1 reduction ratio. The main engine and gearbox are both arranged with electric motor drivien standby lub oil pumps,

A Mitsubishi 6D24T auxiliary engine driving a 90kw 415/3/50 Stamford alternator and a clutched standby/towing pump for deck machinery is fitted on tank tops, one port and one starboard. Spring deadship start provided.

The Mitsubishi main and auxiliary engines were supplied by Macduff Diesels Limited and each engine was arranged for FW cooling using Duramax keel coolers supplied by European Marine. European Marine also supplied the 3 station electronic controls. The Tenfjord steering gear was supplied by Rolls Royce marine.

Pumping is arranged with two Azcue CA50/7-A pumps each driven by a 5.5kw 415/3/50 motor. An Azcue motor driven sump pump is fitted to pump the fish handling area, which is also fitted with a scupper valve port and starboard. Danish hand pumps are fitted for engineroom, aft fishroom, and forward fishroom/forepeak. The aft fishroom hand pump also being fitted with a hydraulic motor drive.

The fuel system is arranged with an Azcue motor driven transfer pump and a C C Jensen filter/separator.

Deck machinery

The deck machinery package is as follows:

3x rapp split trawl winches with 15.7t core pull + remote controls and autotrawl system.

1x Macduff gilson winch

1x Thistle HAP MFB14 discharging crane + 2t winch

Dension hydraulic pumps for deck machinery driven through Hytek pto gearbox are situated on the front end of the main engine.
