An order placed by the Simpson family in Fraserburgh for a new pelagic vessel has gone to the Karstensen yard in Skagen. While the yard and the owners of Christina S have a long working relationship behind them, this is the first time they are collaborating on a new vessel.

“The Karstensen Shipyard is extremely proud of this new order, which continues a working relationship with the Simpson family that stretches back more than 30 years, first with Sedulous and later with three Christina S’s calling in Skagen for regular repairs and maintenance works. Returning customers are the best stamp of approval any shipyard can get,” said the yard’s Kent Damgaard, commenting that a series of recent orders culminating in this one secure the yard’s position as the premier designer and builder of sophisticated pelagic vessels with nine such newbuilds on order for delivery over the next two years.
Scheduled for delivery in July 2023, the new Christina S will be owned and operated by the Simpson family, in partnership with P & J Johnston (Christian Marr), who currently operate the 72 metre Christina S, which will be sold on delivery of the new vessel. Allan Simpson will continue as skipper of the new vessel, as well as manager of the fishing company.
Designed by the Karstensen yard’s own design team, the new Christina S will have a 77 metre overall length and 15.60 metre breadth. It will operate on the same fishing patterns as vessel it replaces, rotating mackerel, herring and blue whiting seasons.
”The design, specification and arrangements of Christina S are the result of an extensive and close co-operation between owners and yard, with all details tailored to suit the customer’s exact specifications,” Kent Damgaard said.
“The focus has been on optimising catch quality and hygiene, in order to enable new Christina S to land first-class products. Optimising the working environment for the safety and comfort for the crew, has been the subject of focus during the design process.”
The owners are shipyard are currently selecting main suppliers for Christina S, although the choice of main engine has already gone to Wärtsilä, which will supply a full propulsion package, including a Wartsila 12V31 main engine.
