Welsh Government funding of up to £1.85m is being opened to support the marine, fisheries and aquaculture sector, with applications accepted from 7 January until 31 March.

The funding, delivered through the Welsh Marine and Fisheries Scheme, is intended to support sustainable growth across the sector while strengthening coastal communities. Grants are available across 11 categories, covering a broad mix of operational, environmental and business-focused activities.

Deputy First Minister with responsibility for Climate Change and Rural Affairs, Huw Irranca-Davies, said the sector plays a strategic role beyond its economic footprint. “Our aquaculture, marine and fisheries sector brings many important benefits,” he said.

“It provides a low carbon, high-quality protein food source, which can support future food security and can also deliver high skilled jobs.”

Eligible projects range from upgrades to aquaculture sites and vessel equipment aimed at reducing emissions and improving energy efficiency, to professional advice on marine environmental sustainability, business planning and marketing. Applicants may also seek funding for optional health and safety equipment, either on board vessels or at land-based facilities.

The previous funding round supported a wide range of projects, including harbour infrastructure improvements, marine research, health and wellbeing initiatives for fishers, and new processing equipment. Smaller-scale investments such as ice machines, weighing scales and cool boxes were also backed.

Jim Evans MBE, of the Welsh Fishermen’s Association, said the scheme has already had a tangible impact. “The fund has been transformative for individual fishermen, women and seafood businesses throughout Wales,” he said, pointing to strong interest in future rounds for vessel improvements, safety equipment, energy efficiency and wellbeing initiatives.

Applicants must be registered with Rural Payments Wales Online. Free, independent support is available through the Welsh Fisheries Animateur Pilot at info@fishinganimateur.co.uk.
