Vónin of the Faroes says it is very happy with the results of a new trawl and codend, designed for blue whiting, which it has supplied to Swedish trawler TOR-ÖN.
The vessel went directly to fishing grounds north of the Faroes in June and, in testing the trawl for herring in arctic waters, it caught its quota of some 600 tonnes after only four hauls, so the vessel could return home after only two days of work.
Vónin said the new trawl has a circumference of 1,536 metres and 32m meshes, in the forenet, made of Tiptolon. The belly is nylon with a few sections of Dyneema netting.
The frame is Eurosteel, Euroflex and Dyneema. The 68m long nylon codend is covered with two layers of double nylon netting and has 35 beckets. The bag can hold approximately 600 tonnes of blue whiting.
The crew of only four, with a Vónin trawl specialist on board, said the trawl adjusted very well in the water and was easy to handle.
Pelagic Super 12
Vónin has also installed a new trawl onboard the Faroese pelagic trawler Krúnborg TN 265. This new 'Pelagic Super 12' trawl has a circumference of 2,048m with 32m meshes in the forenet the latter being made of Super 12 --a 12-stranded and braided material, coloured as required. The belly is in nylon with Euroflex and Dyneema lines. Some sections of the belly use also Dyneema netting.
Since March this year, when Krúnborg took the trawl onboard, she has made eleven trips, catching a total of more than 27.000t of blue whiting. During this time no repairs have been necessary, Vónin said. Vónin says towing resistance is reduced and hence fuel.
