The prototype of diesel-electric trawler ‘Arpege’ is now under construction at Socarenam shipyard in Boulogne-Sur-Mer, France, after 18 months of studies and development.

The vessel is planned to be delivered in June 2015.

The vessel has been designed as part of the research programme Navire du Futur (Ship of the Future), for a 25m diesel-electric trawler to be built and then tested at sea for six months of fishing. The vessel will be equipped for bottom trawling, pelagic trawling and fly shooting.

After sea trials, the aim of the Arpege project is to propose a new concept that is safer, more profitable and with less oil consumption. As soon as the project is finished the partners say that it will provide a new reference for the renewal of the ageing French and European fishing fleet, and a new product line based on the Arpege trawler prototype will be proposed to the fishing industry.

The partners of the project include: Socarenam shipyard; naval architect Bureau Mauric; ENAG, responsible for the studies and supply of the power plant and electric propulsion; Marinelec, responsible for the studies and supply of the power management system; and iXBlue, a navigation systems specialist in charge of the studies and supply of a 3D-sonar developed to detect wrecks or irregularities on the sea bed that pose a high risk of hooking the trawl.

The project is partially subsidised by the French agency Agence de l’Environnement et de la Maitrise de l’Energie.
