Fish feed suppliers Cargill and Skretting have joined forces to use the same vessels to transport fish feed in Norway.

The two suppliers have chosen shipping company, Eidsvaag, for their ‘Fjordfrende’ initiative and hope to create a more efficient system with a reduced environmental impact.
“With this cooperation we will increase the utilisation rate of our fleets and significantly reduce our environmental footprint,” said Fredrik Witte, managing director, Cargill Aqua Nutrition, North Sea.
“We are creating an efficient system by optimising capacity over time, giving aquaculture a better distribution model. Load capacity will be better utilised, there will be shorter sailing distances and investment opportunities will increase,” added Erlend Sødal, managing director of Skretting Norway.
Greenhouse gas reduction equal to 7,500 cars
The company’s expect to see a reduction in the emission of harmful greenhouse gases by one fifth per tonne of fish feed transported. That equals 15-20m kg of CO2 per year, which is equivalent to removing 7,500 cars from the roads.
The project is based on guidelines and models that have been developed by environmental projects for horizontal logistics cooperations, which are financed and supported by the European Commission.
The companies stress that they will remain competitors and have appointed an independent third party, Tri-Vizor, as trustee to ensure that they continue to operate independently from each other. Belgium-based Tri-Vizor has established a framework that will allow collaboration whist safeguarding business-sensitive information.
