Skretting’s integrated digital platform is helping aquaculture business owners calculate expected performance and apply real-time production upgrades on a farm-by-farm basis.

AquaSim combines biology and economics with sensors, feeders and the ‘internet of things’ (IoT) into a single toolkit which allows producers to adapt to different scenarios such as biological events and demand shifts. Skretting estimates that more than 1.5bn farmed fish and shrimp have already been harvested through AquaSim’s recommendations.
The tool enables more informed, proactive decision-making, said Kristoffer Tveit, Skretting’s International Product Manager. “By harnessing the latest technologies available, AquaSim is an evolving global solution that is constantly seeking to progress fish and shrimp farm agility, optimisation, transparency and proactivity,” he added.
Tailored recommendations
AquaSim uses Skretting’s portfolio of aquacultures species’ growth and feeding models built up over three decades to provide tailored recommendations, including the most cost-effective stocking patterns, feed selection and feeding strategy.
Early adopters of the technology include Skretting Ecaudor which uses the tool as a core component of Skretting 360+, a concept launched in 2018 which enables the country’s shrimp farmers to optimise harvests whilst reducing their exposure to risk. Uptake has been brisk in Chile, Spain and Australis and Norway is also using AquaSim on a large scale to forecast feed use.
AquaSim is also being rolled out to more species. African catfish, Japanese bluefin tuna and Australian black tiger shrimp have become the latest sectors to have growth and feeding models included in the system, with more to come.
