Young’s Seafood has today announced the lifting of its moratorium on purchases of cod from the North Sea. The change recognises recent efforts to improve fishing practice which were also acknowledged by today’s EU announcements on North Sea cod.
As part of its commitment to responsible seafood sourcing under its ‘Fish for Life’ programme, Young’s withdrew completely from the purchase of North Sea cod in May 2006. At that time ICES (International Council for Exploration of the Seas) recommended zero fishing effort since North Sea cod stocks were defined as ‘outside safe biological limits.’
Simon Rilatt, who is director of seafood sustainability for Young’s and its parent company, Foodvest, says, “We previously barred any purchase of North Sea cod based on scientific advice which until recently recommended no fishing. However, there are now encouraging signs of recovery which make it appropriate for us to reconsider our position.”
The trend of improvement in North Sea cod stocks has been greatly assisted by industry initiatives – such as the recent example of the Scottish Conservation Credits Scheme (CCS). This has introduced stronger measures to reduce the impact of by-catch, avoid the capture of juvenile fish and to begin to deal with the issue of discards.
Simon Rilatt says, “As a major player in European seafood we are mindful of the support our actions can give to fishery stakeholders and we want to use this positively. So, whilst at this stage we won’t be buying North Sea cod in any major quantities, our re-engagement is a positive signal and allows us to work more closely with those who are fully engaged in work to continue the process of recovery.”
He added, “The response by fishermen to the issues in the North Sea has demonstrated the value of a co-operative industry approach. This week’s EU Council announcements are a signal that initiatives such as the Conservation Credits Scheme can contribute to genuine improvement – both in the health of fisheries and also in the prospects for the industry which relies upon them.”
