Altogether 17 candidates from Norway and a number of other countries submitted their candidacies to this year’s Innovation Prize. That is twice as many as any time before, according to Odd Berg, who has acted as secretary to the Jury.

The members of the Jury are:

• Kjell Maroni, Head of R&D – Aquaculture, the Norwegian Seafood Association (FHL)

• Berit A. Hansen, Head of R&D – Industry, the Norwegian Seafood Association ( FHL)

• Viggo Andreassen, Special Advisor, Agriculture & Marine, Innovation Norway

After going through the technical documentation submitted, evaluating the degree of innovation, relevance for the aquaculture industry, the market potential and the importance for the company itself, the Jury selected three finalists. These are (in random order):

TelCage AS, Trondheim, Norway, for an ICT-based system for remote control of central operating functions and monitoring of the fish farm from any place ashore. The objective of the system is to reduce feed and production costs, secure safe operations on large locations with regard to environmental protection and controlling biomass and equipment at the location.

Redox AS, Averøy, Norway, for development of a total water treatment solution including cleaning of transport tanks in well boats, giving high biosecurity for transport of fish for the aquaculture industry. The system includes a high degree of documentation and automatic log in connection with transport and cleaning.

Stranda Prolog AS on behalf of Seafood Innovations pty Ltd, Sheldon, Australia, for development of a patented "stun and bleed” system for stunning and bleeding the fish in an integrated unit. The system is incorporated in modern slaughtering lines and has a large capacity, while at the same time reducing stress in the fish before slaughtering.

The winner will receive NOK100,000 plus a diploma and a painting. The prize will be handed over by the Minister of Fisheries and Coastal Affairs, Helga Pedersen, during the Nor-Fishing Foundation’s reception for exhibitors and invited guests at Rica Nidelven Hotel in Trondheim on Tuesday 18 August at 19:00 hrs.
