Organisers of the 6th World Fisheries Congress have announced that there will be a reduced registration rate for fishermen to improve accessibility to the event, which takes place in Edinburgh later this year.
The WFC, which is being held at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre from 7-11 May 2012, attracts international delegates from throughout the academic, scientific and political sectors of the fisheries community. In recognition of the relevance of fishing and the desire to engage with those directly involved, organisers are offering an entry package to fishermen which is half the normal price to delegates to encourage as many fishermen as possible to attend.
Mike Park, chief executive of the Scottish White Fish Producers Association, anticipates the decision will be received enthusiastically by industry. “This new reduced price rate will allow fishermen to attend in person. Not only will the incentive enable fishermen to attend for the full week, but for the first time it gives them the opportunity to have a presence and a voice alongside the world’s key influencers in the international fishing industry.
“There have been growing links between catchers and scientists over the last few years and this move from the WFC will help mould and continue to foster relationships between the two.”
The Congress is held every four years and is of global stature. This year’s event looks at the important topic of Sustainable Fisheries in a Changing World. Encompassing the key themes, speakers from industry, science, fishing and aquaculture within the worldwide fisheries community will address up to 2,000 delegates on the current and future issues surrounding sustainable fishing and explore informed global solutions.
